Topmount vs Undermount Drawn Sinks: Which Should You Specify?
Topmount or undermount is one of the first decisions in any sink specification, and it is also one that buyers revisit when a project moves from one market to another. The difference is simple to describe and surprisingly consequential in installation, cost and packaging.

The difference in one sentence
A topmount sink has a rim that rests on top of the countertop and is sealed at the rim; an undermount sink is fixed underneath the countertop so the opening is flush and crumbs can be wiped straight into the bowl. The same bowl body is often used for both, with the rim either welded on or omitted.
What changes in the countertop
Undermount installation puts real demands on the countertop material. Stone, quartz and solid surface handle the unsupported opening well; laminate and thin timber generally do not, and a topmount sink is the practical choice there. Undermount also needs a properly cut and polished opening, plus brackets or clips that match the counter thickness, which shifts cost and risk from the factory to the fabricator and installer.
Where the cost sits
In handmade production, an undermount body can actually be cheaper to produce than a topmount, because the rim panel is welded onto the same base structure rather than formed separately. The saving at the factory, however, is often spent again at the countertop stage, which is why the two options frequently end up close in total project cost even when the sink prices differ.
Packaging and transport
The rim on a topmount sink is the part most likely to be bent in transit, so it usually needs edge protection inside the carton and a reinforced corner. Undermount sinks have no rim to deform but are more exposed at the flange, and both benefit from being packed with the accessories in a fixed position rather than loose in the box.
Which to specify
- Apartment and mid-market projects: topmount is faster to install and safer with a wider range of countertop materials.
- High-end residential and kitchen showrooms: undermount gives the flush look buyers now expect.
- E-commerce and replacement market: topmount, because it fits an existing cut-out and needs no countertop work.
- Hospitality: topmount or a rimmed undermount with reinforced brackets, depending on the cleaning protocol and counter material.
Comparing the ranges
Both mounting styles are in production at TEGAO, across the topmount handmade range and the undermount range, as well as the pressed sink range. Models such as the H-7550TSJZ-VBK and H-6050TSJ-VSV are topmount in current production, and the same bowls can be discussed as undermount where the volume justifies the change.
Next step
Tell TEGAO which mounting style the market expects, along with the countertop material and target quantity, and the factory will confirm which models are available without new tooling. Orders start at 100 pcs per item, with a production lead time of 35-45 days and shipping from Guangzhou or Shenzhen. See the full product range or use the contact page.
