Is Making an Undermount Kitchen Sink Simpler Than Making a Top-Mount Sink?

Mar 18, 2026

Although both are considered handmade sinks, there are still differences in the production processes between top-mount kitchen sinks and undermount kitchen sinks. Because the rim panel of a top-mount sink is actually welded onto the base structure of an undermount sink, generally speaking, undermount kitchen sinks are somewhat cheaper than top-mount sinks. But note, this is not an absolute rule.

For instance, the thickened rim panels that many people prefer nowadays are mostly found on top-mount sinks. The manufacturing process is not一体成型 (integral molding); instead, it involves welding two separate panels together. Therefore, there can be a certain difference in thickness. To save costs, some stainless steel sink manufacturers make the basin body from thinner material while welding on a very thick rim panel. Unless you're an insider, you wouldn't easily notice the significant difference in thickness just by looking. Typically, the四周 (all around) of a handmade sink basin body needs to be sprayed with a coating and have sound-absorbing pads attached, so it's not easy to measure the actual thickness of the basin body directly.

TECOOL, for its undermount kitchen sinks, uses a single piece of stainless steel panel for cutting, shaping, and welding. There is no issue of inconsistent thickness between the basin body and the rim; all are made using an integral molding process.

However, many manufacturers today, in order to compete, produce sinks where not just two panels are welded together, but sometimes several pieces are拼接 (spliced/joined). This is why some people wonder why their undermount kitchen sink leaks. It's highly possible that there are too many weld points, and due to inconsistent thickness, the welding process might be immature, creating small gaps that are difficult to see with the naked eye. Over time, these gaps easily accumulate dirt and grime, eventually leading to corrosion, rust, and leakage. So, everyone must carefully distinguish these details when choosing a kitchen sink.
