Our anticipation for good food often leads us to overlook the fact that the kitchen can also be a place that harms our health. According to research, long-term inhalation of kitchen fumes can cause respiratory diseases such as rhinitis and pharyngitis, and may even increase the risk of lung cancer. Therefore, health in the kitchen is extremely important, which is why range hoods have become essential in modern kitchens. However, products vary in quality – how do you choose?

First, let's look at how a range hood is composed.

1. Basic Structure and Working Principle of a Range Hood

Generally, the basic structure of a range hood mainly consists of these parts: the casing, motor, fan wheel, exhaust pipe, volute casing, check valve, air deflector, panel, oil collection device, lighting device, power switch, and power cord.

  • Casing: Serves as the structure supporting the entire range hood. The air deflector and panel are installed on the casing. It is a fundamental component. Additionally, parts like the volute casing, lighting, motor, fan wheel, and check valve are installed on or within the casing.

  • Motor: Composed of components like the stator, rotor, front/rear covers, and ball bearings. It is the core component of the range hood.

  • Fan Wheel: The effectiveness of smoke exhaust depends heavily on this component, as it directly impacts exhaust performance and operational efficiency. Currently, the multi-blade (sirocco) fan wheel is the most common type on the market.

  • Exhaust Pipe: During installation, you need to预留 (prepare/reserve) an air outlet and ensure a nearby power socket is arranged properly.

  • Volute Casing: Connects to the check valve above and the air deflector below. Its main function is to allow the fumes drawn in by the fan wheel to be smoothly discharged through the exhaust pipe. Simultaneously, the fan wheel flings condensed oil onto the volute casing walls, where it collects – this makes cleaning easier, as you won't need to frequently disassemble other parts for cleaning, which is time-consuming and risks damaging components.

  • Check Valve: Located at the air outlet, it prevents backdraft. It connects the volute casing to the exhaust duct and prevents outside air from blowing back in.

  • Air Deflector & Panel: These primarily function as the smoke collection surface, forming the canopy or hood that captures the油烟 (fumes/oily smoke).

  • Oil Collection Device: Partly described above, it typically consists of an oil collection box, oil collection cup, oil guide ring, and components of the exhaust pipe.

Working Principle: When the power is switched on, the motor drives the fan wheel to rotate rapidly, accelerating from slow to fast. This creates a difference in air pressure between the inside and outside of the air inlet and exhaust outlet. This pressure difference allows the cooking fumes to be drawn in, rotate and accelerate together with the air inside the volute casing, and be blown outdoors. Simultaneously, during this exhaust process, some high-temperature oil particles in the fumes are flung onto the inner walls of the volute casing by the centrifugal force of the fan wheel. There, they condense into oil droplets, which then flow back into the oil collection device under gravity.
